Weichai Power, founded in 2002, primarily operates in power systems, commercial vehicles, agricultural equipment, and smart logistics. It ranks first globally in sales of heavy-duty engines and transmissions, is a global leader in industrial forklifts, and is the top-selling agricultural equipment and heavy-duty truck manufacturer in China. Currently, Weichai Power has subsidiaries throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, and its products are exported to over 150 countries and regions. It owns several well-known domestic and international brands, including Weichai Power Engines, Shaanxi Automobile Group, KION Group (Germany), PSI Group (USA), Baudouin Group (France), and Ballard Group (Canada).
Since the 1990s, Weifang Diesel Engine Factory has been exporting diesel engine components and supporting power equipment, selling its products to some overseas markets through traditional trade models. However, limited by technological barriers and brand influence, the market share of high-end diesel engines overseas was almost monopolized by European, American, and Japanese companies, and Weichai Power’s diesel engines were mainly concentrated in the low-to-mid-end market.
In 1995, Weifang Diesel Engine Factory continued to introduce the production technology of the WD618 series diesel engines used in heavy-duty vehicles from Steyr, and successfully developed it in 2000.
In 1999, Weifang Diesel Engine Factory acquired Sichuan Changjiang Diesel Engine Factory, expanding the production capacity of the WD615 series diesel engines.
In 2002, with the approval of the Shandong Provincial Government, Weifang Diesel Engine Factory, together with other investors, contributed its liabilities, cash, and operating assets related to the production and sales of the WD615 and WD618 series diesel engines to establish “Weichai Power Co., Ltd.” (hereinafter referred to as “Weichai Power”), which is controlled by Weichai Holding Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Weichai Group”).
In 2003, Weichai Power developed the X6160/R6160 series medium-speed diesel engines based on its existing 6160 series, achieving significant improvements in power, durability, and economy.
In 2005, Weichai Power launched China’s first Blue Engine series diesel engine with completely independent intellectual property rights. Compared to previous diesel engines, it optimized combustion and structural design, resulting in stronger power and lower fuel consumption. It is widely used as an engine for commercial vehicles and industrial machinery such as heavy-duty trucks, buses, bulldozers, and excavators.
In 2012, Weichai Power established its global R&D center in Weifang, Shandong Province, encompassing a technology center, new product testing laboratory, and new product prototyping center, providing support for the company’s subsequent engine and core component R&D.
Simultaneously, in 2012, Weichai Power independently developed China’s first high-pressure common rail electronic control system and achieved mass production, successfully breaking the monopoly of foreign companies in this field. The high-pressure common rail electronic control system is an advanced fuel injection technology in the diesel engine field. Through precise control of fuel injection, it helps diesel engines optimize diesel combustion efficiency, reduce exhaust emissions, and lower operating noise. Subsequently, based on the high-pressure common rail electronic control system, Weichai Power developed its own electronic control system applicable to gas engines, achieving cross-domain application of its independent electronic control technology.
In 2015, Weichai Power launched the WP13 series high-power diesel engine. With stronger power and lower fuel consumption than ordinary diesel engines, it became a popular engine choice for heavy-duty vehicles such as long-haul standard-load tractors, dump trucks, mixer trucks, refrigerated trucks, and hazardous materials transport vehicles, further consolidating its leading position in the commercial vehicle engine market.
In 2020, Weichai Power launched the world’s first diesel engine with a thermal efficiency of 50.23%, placing China’s heavy-duty diesel engine technology among the world’s best. Thermal efficiency, the proportion of a diesel engine’s chemical energy directly converted into usable mechanical energy, is a core indicator of engine performance; higher thermal efficiency means a more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and high-performance engine.
In 2021, Weichai Power acquired a 60% stake in “Chongyou Gaoke Electronic Control Fuel Injection System Co., Ltd.” (hereinafter referred to as “Chongyou Gaoke”), completing its industrial chain layout for core diesel engine components. Founded in 1967, Chongyou Gaoke focuses on the research and development of diesel engine fuel injection systems. Fuel injection systems are core components of diesel engines, directly affecting their power performance, fuel efficiency, and emission standards. Through the acquisition of Chongyou Gaoke, Weichai Power can not only reduce component procurement costs but also rapidly advance the adaptation and development of fuel injection systems to its own diesel engine products, shortening the iteration cycle of new products.
In addition, Weichai Power acquired a 62% stake in Lovol Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (later renamed Weichai Lovol Smart Agriculture Technology Co., Ltd., hereinafter referred to as “Weichai Lovol”), thus perfecting its layout in agricultural machinery equipment. Founded in 2004, Weichai Lovol mainly develops harvesting machinery, tractors, agricultural implements, and other agricultural machinery equipment, providing customers with complete mechanization solutions.
